Square taper bottom bracket?
Anyone have an old square taper BB (68x113 or longer) they'd be willing to part with?

kilgore- 01-16-2008

What's that for? Shimano? I have a square taper campy record bb that I'm taking out of my tt bike.

it's actually for a mavic crank. i'm building a TT frankenbike. What are the differences between a campy and shimano square taper bb?

greggrosenthal- 01-16-2008

I think it has to do more with axle length and the "depth" of the square...kinda like the V1 vs V2 octalink. (older 'version' vs newer 'version'. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_n-o.html#octalink

if that's indeed the case, it would depend on the spindle length of the bb and if it's setup for english or italian threads. Do you know the spindle length, Doug? I bet it's 70 mm.

I have a shimano one for you if you want that...

Shimano and Campy square taper bottom brackets have the same taper to them, but the Campy one is slightly smaller. Which means, you can use a shimano bb for a campy crank, but the crank won't go as far onto the spindle, causing possible alignment issues, and an increased risk of breaking the spindle because of decreased surface area. Using a campy taper BB and a shimano tapered crank, will usually mean that the crank will go "too far" onto the spindle, causing alignment issues again, and most likely the crank will bottom-out on the spindle without properly securing itself. FYI...

If that's the case, then yes, Rowdy. I'd like to take you up on your offer. Do you know the spindle length? I'll need at least 111 or 113 mm.

Where's Mateo when I need somebody to reply: "I have a 10 inch spindle and big round balls, baby."

crankin rc- 01-17-2008

Damn...its good to see humor on this forum more consistently. It should be a 113 which I think was the standard Shimano size, but I'll check tonight. BTW: I usually charge $100 for the use of my spindle! I like you...so it will be free for the first use.

If your spindle is anything like Doug's waterbottle.....it will be a little too, oh, i don't know....FLACCID for my purposes. Thanks, man.

kilgore- 01-17-2008

:? Yes, my waterbottle will always be flaccid for your purposes.

Hey...I did find this today and it is 68x113 which is what you need. I'll make sure to bring it to the next ride or if you need it sooner, I can ship it.

Sweet, Rowdy. You can just bring it to the Carter Lake ride on Sat. Thanks.
